365 Days of the Great Names of God, Day 27: The Word

The Word

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (John 1:1 NIV)

The original Greek word here for Word is "Logos." I know this is rather obvious, but it reminds me of our English word "logo"—a way of succinctly communicating what something or someone is about. Which makes perfect sense to my mind, because Jesus—the Word, the Logos—IS what God is about.

Before the Word showed up in human form in a stable, God's words were communicated by prophets...His messengers, his mouthpieces, his mailmen, if you will.

But...

"Many years later, God was going to send another Messenger. This Messenger would be God's own Son. He would be called "The Word" because he himself would be God's Message. God's Message translated into our own language. Everything God wanted to say to the whole world—in a Person." (Sally Lloyd-Jones, The Jesus Storybook Bible)

I'd love to hear from you! Feel free to tell me what you really think. Years ago, I explained to my then-two-year-old that my appointment with a counselor was "sort of like going to a doctor who will help me be a better mommy." Without blinking, she replied, "You'd better go every day." All of which is just to say I've spent some time in the school of brutal honesty!
