365 Days of the Great Names of God, Day 314: Knower of the Heart

Knower of the Heart

"And they prayed and said, 'You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen.' " (Acts 1:24 NKJV)

I learned the other day that a beautiful treasure is somewhat buried for us in Acts 1:24.

The Greek word "kardiognostes," literally means "knower ('gnostes') of the heart" ("kardio"...and if you're one of my cardio-drumming friends—or, a cardiologist—I know you're seeing our English rendering here).

God is the Knower of the Heart. Of your heart. Of my heart. Of the hearts of all. Every nook and cranny. Every dark spot. Every crack. Every wound, whether the scar is faded or fresh.

If God was not who He is, this might make us cringe, this raw exposure. But because the I AM *is* who He is, we can trust Him utterly with our hearts.

And with that trust comes such blessed relief! How often do we long for someone to see the deepest recesses of our hearts without us having to try to explain what we ourselves sometimes don't understand?

"It's like this, God," we say, stammering, looking for the words. And He says, "I know. I am Kardiognostes. I know your heart."

God made our hearts.

He knows our hearts.

He loves our hearts.

He heals our hearts.

May He have our hearts.

I'd love to hear from you! Feel free to tell me what you really think. Years ago, I explained to my then-two-year-old that my appointment with a counselor was "sort of like going to a doctor who will help me be a better mommy." Without blinking, she replied, "You'd better go every day." All of which is just to say I've spent some time in the school of brutal honesty!
