I Wash Hoodies Instead of Onesies Now, But My Babies Still Need Me

I don't remember the last time I washed a onesie.

I gather that "last" was supposed to be a maternal milestone I watched out for and gave its due. But I imagine I didn't realize I was doing it at the time and so didn't pay too much attention to it until I was packing up a few of my girls' most treasured pieces of baby clothing that I couldn't quite bear to part with and storing them away for "someday."

Now, as a mom of older daughters, I wash dance leotards and college t-shirts and skinny jeans and "that gray shirt with the crocheted part on it that I want to wear next Wednesday" and sweaters in gorgeous shades of blush and dusty rose that I ask to borrow for myself.

And yet, they are still my babies.

They still need things only I can give.

I'm grateful for the chance to share this piece of my mom story over on Her View From Home, and I'd love to have you take the trip over there to read the rest of what I promise is a very short post...

  1. When I was in the middle of the Ick with the flu recently, my mom asked if I wanted her to come over and take care of me. I wasn't about to make her get in the car and drive the two hours just to watch me sleep on the couch, but it sure was nice to know she would! (Also, I love that you haven't been to the movies in forever, too. The last few I went to in, I fell asleep, and I decided I could do that at home for free!) Finally, I just love, love, love that you and I share this appreciation for every single stage of our daughters' lives. It's that constant feeling of, "oooh, no, THIS is the best age!" You know? <3

    1. Dearest Lisa, I love your mom, and I've never even met her. For one thing, she produced you, so that is some powerful evidence for wonderfulness. For another, from what I know of her through you, she reminds me of my mom, who is wonderful. We must get them and ourselves together sometime. And YES about falling asleep at the movies! I had to take a nap before the last one I went to, which I did as a chaperone for my daughter and it was "The Greatest Showman," which was so fabulous I had no problem staying awake. And yes, yes, yes to being kindred spirits on the stages of our beloved children. I know you are having SO much fun with your Gv right now, and I know you have so much fun up ahead to look forward to!!! Also, I just love you. The end.

    2. :) Getting our moms together sounds like a great idea! And I'm putting myself on the hold list at the library for that movie, because if you like it... I love you, too!

    3. So, that's a double moms-together date someday! :) And, yes: put yourself on the list! It's pretty amazing, that movie. The girls' dance studio owner completely changed this year's recital theme to "The Ringmaster" when she saw it. I already have my tissues packed for June 16th.

  2. My kids are getting so big now but I know they'll always need me. Even if they protest.

  3. Aw, my teen in particular sure does protest but he's always laughing as I try to sneak in hugs and kisses. I know he still needs them once in awhile even if he won't admit it. ;)

    1. You are a wise mama! After all, it's up to us to know what our kids need even when they don't know it sometimes! :)(Or won't admit it!)

I'd love to hear from you! Feel free to tell me what you really think. Years ago, I explained to my then-two-year-old that my appointment with a counselor was "sort of like going to a doctor who will help me be a better mommy." Without blinking, she replied, "You'd better go every day." All of which is just to say I've spent some time in the school of brutal honesty!
